Message to future exchange students,
August 9th, 2008, just after wrapping-up the short-term research project:

The memory I left in Ueno Lab.

-------------------------------

How the Lab impressed me

My experience in the Lab

Notice and advice for prospective student

----------------------------

From Oct, 2007 to Aug, 2008, I came to UEC, Japan as one of the JUSST program exchange students. As a third year undergraduate student majored in Optic Communication in my home university, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Cheng Du, China, I enjoyed a three-month short participation in Ueno Lab.

Ueno Lab, having its region of fiber and semiconductor devices for ultra fast optic communication, impressed me by the sufficient and high-ranked facilities. Who have had some hardware research experiences would tell the significance of facilities. Just because of these complicated and expensive equipments, platforms of research are guaranteed. And also attractive topics are undertaken in the Lab, for example, the functional units realizing all-optical communication. Admiring it is for any researchers who may fulfill themselves in a prospective and worthwhile region.

Professor UENO Yoshiyasu, the leader of the Lab, is of kindness on daily life. Small talking about family, trip and so on are often aroused between Prof. Ueno and lab members. I am always thanking for his worm words after the catastrophe of the earthquake in Si Chuan Province, China.

Still, Professor is strict when things come to be study and research. The lab members, everyone especially the postgraduate student, are making themselves in the laboratory for at least 50 hours per week. No matter spring or winter vocation, Lab and lab members are approaching by their steps. From these hardworking members, I received lots of help. They helped me with the textbooks, brought me through the experiments, kindly response to my acquisitions. During the short stay in Ueno Lab, I had some fundamental experiments about characteristic measurements of Semiconductor Optical Amplifier and a wavelength conversion gate for all optical processing. It was no that easy for me, as a third year undergraduate, however, I am confident the experiences are of great worth for my future study and research.

For the prospective students who are going to join in this lab, I would like make some notice and advice. Wherever you came from, the treatment may be the same as the regular Japanese lab members which means their punctuality and hardworking should be your examples. Participate weekly meetings, symposium, seminar and so on holding among Professor and lab members, don't be late and let alone absence. In spite of language problems or anything else, frequent communications with Professor and lab members is very highly considered.

Prepare yourself, and will find they have a gold mine for you.

At the very end, please let me express me grateful feelings to Professor Ueno for taking care of me these semesters, to Professor Suzuki for the countless help and instructions, and to the lab members for every memory we shared together.

Best Regards,

Pei Yu.
